AUTOPILOT IS FOR LOVERS - TO THE WOLVES
Autopilot Is For Lovers is the Indie-Americana conception of Portland duo Adrienne Hatkin and Paul Seely. Both haunting and delicate, Hatkins vocal vibratos seem to reveal our fortunes with lyrical poignancy while recognizing our mortality. Set against her trill stylings are resplendent soundscapes of instrumentation replete with glockenspiels, casiotones, pianos, guitars, banjos, accordions and driving drum beats that remind one of one's own heartbeat. Autopilot Is For Lovers makes music that is as chilling as it is warming, tempting listeners with a world of sound where secrets are indiscriminately revealed and are reflected upon hours after the music has stopped.
Though the band was formed in 2005 they sound at times as if they could have come from a much earlier time of dusty roads, tiny chapels, new skepticism and old town laws. Separately, each half of the pair have been honing their craft as musicians since they were children. As a child in Montclair, New Jersey, Hatkin cultivated an interest in music, writing pop songs in her head, complete with little imagined trumpet parts. Despite her declaration that at age nine she "had no idea what [she] was talking about" as far her songwriting was concerned, she was still nurturing what is now true musicianship. Similarly, Seely has spent many years pursuing his own musical endeavors, growing up in Salem, Oregon playing drums, guitar, keys and trombone. In addition to his early proficiency with many instruments, Seely sang in youth choirs, including an advanced jazz choir at Sprague High School in Salem.
Like many musicians in Portland Paul has played in his fair share of bands like, Sixbidsolo, Local Heroes, The Trees are For Us, The Ball and the Biscuit, Proheron Statement, Elkteeth, and Porches but he is perhaps best known for playing a variety of instruments in fellow Portland band, The Builders and the Butchers. Seely's passion for music did not stop at instrumentation and performance, though. For about six years he has been working on engineering and recording bands such as, Speaker Rhodes, Viking Funeral and Doctor Helicopter.
In 2008 Autopilot Is For Lovers released its Sore Eyes EP on Stereotype Records, a seven-song production that Paul POP! of First Coast News calls a "fascinating listen because of just how rustic and mysterious Autopilot sounds." Presently, the pair is getting ready to release their debut full-length release, To The Wolves, a record propelling audiences into a world where the music grips the creature of our being and wrings out the conscience. To The Wolves is due for release in spring 2009 on Bladen County Records.
